Edley Hicks Jones Jr. died suddenly but peacefully Aug. 19, 2015, at the age of 87.
He was the only child of Dr. Edley Hicks Jones and Anne Tupper Jiggitts Jones. He was born in Vicksburg July 1,1928, with a spirit and sense of humor that were his enduring traits of his whole life. We are almost certain that the Rotary Wheel is imprinted somewhere on his wonderful psyche.
He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Carr Central High School. He graduated from the University of Mississippi, and while he was obtaining a BS degree in economics, he preferred to focus his attention on all things Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the love of his life, Lucy Hollis Imig.
He served his country as a captain in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict.
For over 55 years, he was engaged in the property and casualty insurance profession and was active in the Mississippi Association of Insurance Agents. He was also a Realtor and had served as the vice president of the Vicksburg-Warren County Board of Realtors.
He and his wife owned and operated American International Travel Agency for over 25 years, traveling extensively worldwide, including 84 cruises.
He was a member and past President of the Rotary Club of Vicksburg. He had just completed his 60th year as its secretary/treasurer. In recognition of his service to Rotary, the central Mississippi District 6820 established in his name the annual Club Best Attendance Award.
On July 28, 2015, he was further recognized by Rotary with his designation as an inductee into the Heritage and History Hall of Fame. He is one of only 120 members since the beginning of Rotary to receive this honor.
For 33 years he was a member of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Vicksburg and the Advisory Board of Trustmark National Bank.
He had been a member and past president of the Y’s Men’s Club and was currently serving on the Board of Directors of the YMCA. He was on the committee that planned Warner-Tully Camp.
He served as chairman of the Port and Harbor Commission for the City of Vicksburg and served a term on the Vicksburg Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
He was the recipient of the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award and also served as president of the Vicksburg-Warren County Ole Miss Alumni Association.
For five years he authored a weekly column entitled, “Let’s Go Boating” about the pleasure boating scene in the Vicksburg area for the Vicksburg Evening Post.
He was a member of The Church of Holy Trinity and had served two terms on the Vestry.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lucy, to whom he was married for 65 years; and three children, Anne Tupper England (Charlie), Edley H. Jones III (Brenda), Howell Robinson Jones, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was a remarkable man and we will miss him, his big heart and his wonderful sense of humor so very much.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015, at Holy Trinity Church.
Visitation will be 9:30am until 11:00 am.
