Missy Gators win softball opener

Vicksburg High pieced together a big inning with some timely hits Thursday and won its slow-pitch softball season opener over Ridgeland, 9-2.
Jazmin Green tripled and Shelby Muirhead doubled during a five-run third inning to lead the Missy Gators’ big offensive night. Those were among six consecutive hits the team had as it blew the game open.
Muirhead finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while Green was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Five players had two hits apiece.
The Missy Gators will return to action Saturday morning when they play Riverside at 9 a.m. and Hazlehurst at 10:45 in the WC Slow-Pitch Invitational tournament at Warren Central’s Lucy Young Field.
Warren Central 4, NW Rankin 3
Megan Stewart reached on a fielder’s choice, then scored with the help of two errors in the eighth inning as Warren Central beat Northwest Rankin 4-3 Thursday.
Stewart didn’t have a hit, but reached base three times — twice on errors and once on the fielder’s choice — in four at-bats, and scored twice. Kasy Cortezie had a double and Brooke Patterson an RBI single for the Lady Vikes, who trailed 3-0 after one inning but chipped away at the deficit and won it in extra innings.
Abby Whitfield had an RBI single for Northwest Rankin.
Warren Central will host its annual Slow-Pitch Invitational tournament Saturday at Lucy Young Field. It’ll play Riverside at 12:30 p.m. and Pearl at 4. In between those games, Pearl will take on Hazlehurst at 2:15.
