Merchants: White after Labor Day is quite OK

Published 12:00 am Sunday, August 23, 2015

With Labor Day just two weeks away, some are trying to get their last wears out of their white clothes before the items are considered taboo.

On the other hand, some think the fashion faux pas is outdated and plan to continue wearing certain whites well into winter.

Wearing white after Labor Day is a rule more strictly followed by certain age groups, said Keri Post, owner and stylist at Rouge Boutique Salon.

“Winter white is huge,” she said. “That’s an after Labor Day white.”

Post said as times have change, it’s more up to individuals to decide than a hard and fast rule to follow.

“We don’t normally order a lot of white after Labor Day unless it’s a winter white or a clay white or a stone white, in which case we have a lot of white actually,” she said. “We have our white jeans on sale, but you could definitely wear white jeans with a black and white top and black boots for a holiday party.”

Blush and Bashful Boutique employee Allison Nunnelee said she has no problem with wearing white after Labor Day.

“I think it’s outdated,” she said. “For fall you should probably stick with warmer, darker colors, but if you want to wear white, go for it.”

Nunnelee said she agrees white is more of a summer color, but it’s certainly acceptable to wear at any time.

“You may not want to wear all white, but touches of white can be nice,” she said.

Zsa Zsa’s Gifts employee Mary Quinn DeRossette said she wears white after Labor Day for a few reasons.

“I’ll wear white jeans and a cute top out,” she said. “In Mississippi, it’s still really hot after Labor Day. White is a cooler color.”

DeRossette said it’s also an old rule that has changed to keep up with current fashion trends.

“It’s OK to wear white after Labor Day,” she said. “As long as you’re comfortable, why not wear white after Labor Day?”

Barbara Willingham, owner of Willingham’s, said it is fine to wear white after Labor Day.

“I think so,” she said. “I wear white blouses and white jackets.”

Willingham said she might wear off-white pants.

“There’s also a winter white,” she said. “You never really know.”

Though it’s becoming more accepted, some whites may be best left unworn during the winter months, Willingham said.
