It took more than two years, but someone finally found a way to beat Sharkey-Issaquena Academy.
Marvell Academy scored on a 50-yard touchdown pass with 4:18 remaining in the fourth quarter and went on to beat SIA 26-22 Friday night. That snapped SIA’s 29-game winning streak that included the last two MAIS eight-man championships and two undefeated seasons.
A week after rushing for more than 400 yards against Hebron Christian, SIA (1-1) only had 11 against Marvell — a team that won 10 games last season but bowed out in the first round of the playoffs.
Austin Herraney completed 17 of 34 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns for SIA, including an 11-yarder to Chandler Ross with 5:42 left that put the Confederates ahead 22-20.
Herraney also threw a 35-yard TD pass to Ross and a 72-yarder to Cole Delaney.
Marvell (2-0), however, answered with a quick touchdown and then held on to hand SIA its first loss since the 2012 playoffs against Russell Christian.
SIA has won 35 of its last 37 games since the midway point of the 2012 season.
Central Hinds 24, Brookhaven Academy 13
Donnie Haley rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown, Tanner Leggett added 81 yards and a score on the ground, and Central Hinds (2-0) beat Brookhaven Academy to remain undefeated.
Gunar Robinson kicked a 29-yard field goal for the Cougars and weston Acey had nine tackles and three sacks.
Central Hinds will play at Porters Chapel Academy next Friday.
