Trumpe-l’oeil: Creating optical illusion

Published 12:00 am Saturday, September 12, 2015

Let’s just call it what it is —bullying. With jabbing insults about a person’s appearance to crass remarks about ethnic groups, Donald Trump is a bully. I know it is common practice for candidates to try to undermine an opposing candidate’s platform, but to personally assault their appearance is ludicrous. Unfortunately, what I find more disturbing is that Trump seems to be getting a pass on his bad behavior.

Let me be perfectly clear, this is in no way me showing my support for any one of the other candidates. It is only concern for what is happening with our country.

If Trump were sitting in a classroom or was an employee of a company and exhibited this type of behavior, he would more than likely be suspended or fired. But no, for some reason we are watching this man seek the highest office in the country, and there seems to be no accountability for his actions.

Why is this happening? Are we just anesthetized to disrespect?

I have caught glimpses of some of the reality TV shows and have watched talk shows where families, couples and friends act out in ways publically that would embarrass most people, but these folks do not even seem to flinch at their disgusting conduct.

And unfortunately, the more aggressive and provocative the actions, the higher the ratings.

This type of reinforcement confirms, in my mind, that being publicly known at any cost outweighs acting decent.

According to William James, an American psychologist, it is our human tendencies that drive us to be noticed, but in my opinion the levels at which one will go to achieve notoriety seem to be snowballing.

We wonder why our children seem naive about bad behavior, and regrettably, the little darlings are seeing this type of behavior as the excepted norm.

It is my opinion, Trump is taking advantage of these lapses as we have lost sight of presidential behavior.

His antics are playing right into the hands of those who enjoy watching the outrageous reality shows, and with absolutely no qualms about what he says and whom he offends, he now claims his outrageous behavior is merely to entertain.

Please, if you want to be a stand-up comedian, find another stage rather than the presidential primaries.

In addition to his bullying antics, Trump also exudes narcissism.

Admittedly, candidates and presidents must have an air of self-confidence, but when Trump referred to himself as “good-looking,” I choked.

Clearly, people are fed up with the path our country is taking with both the Democrats’ and Republicans’ supposed frontrunners falling to the wayside.

I agree. We do need to send a message to Washington, but this is one woman who really hopes the message will not be Donald Trump.

Maybe it is just my southern upbringing, but I have always subscribed to the idea that you can catch more flies with honey.

A narcissistic bully in the White House could be a lethal mix, and I certainly do not want to see our country in a bunch of sticky situations.
