Porters Chapel Academy was looking forward to this game for a while, to the chance to play another Class AA opponent instead of the AAA and AAAA monsters it had been matched up with, and to gain an important district win.
It didn’t go according to plan.
Damon Fleming caught two touchdown passes and took an interception back for a third as Trinity beat PCA 43-0 in the District 5-AA opener for both teams Friday night in Natchez.
Trinity scored 23 points in the second quarter to turn the game into a rout.
“We fell apart there early and were never able to recover. Trinity had some good athletes and we got beat on speed,” PCA coach Wayne Lynch said. “We’ve just got to go back to the drawing board.”
Patrick Minor caught six passes for 75 yards for PCA (1-4) and Michael Brewer had seven tackles. The Eagles’ quarterbacks threw three interceptions, however, including Fleming’s pick-six with 5:15 left in the second quarter that made it 34-0.
PCA also had a punt blocked, fumbled on two promising drives in the first half — one was recovered and another lost about 20 yards inside Trinity territory — and fell behind 37-0 at halftime. In four games this season, PCA has been outscored 150-0 in the first half.
SIA 68, North Sunflower 32
Austin Herraney threw three touchdown passes and ran for three more scores as Sharkey-Issaquena Academy (4-1) thumped North Sunflower Academy.
Herraney completed 9 of 12 passes for 175 yards and ran for 171 yards on only seven carries as SIA won its third consecutive game. Cole Delaney added a 75-yard touchdown run and Chandler Ross a 25-yarder in the first quarter.
Delaney also caught a touchdown pass, and Will Holcomb finished with three receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
Tallulah Aca., 50, Humphreys Aca. 6
Mason Todd completed 6 of 7 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown, and added two scores on the ground as Tallulah Academy (4-0, 2-0 District 4-A) routed Humphreys Academy (1-3, 0-1).
Dakota Cone and Ryan Hodge also scored rushing touchdowns for Tallulah, and Cone also caught an 82-yard pass from Todd in the second quarter.
WCCA 30, Central Hinds 24
Kyle Folds scored on a 9-yard run with 48 seconds remaining as Wilkinson County Christian (3-2) handed Central Hinds (3-1) its first loss of the season.
Central Hinds quarterback Tanner Leggett completed 6 of 8 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns, including a 19-yarder to Dallas Martin that tied the game with about 4 minutes remaining.
Leggett also rushed for 76 yards. Cooper Currie caught three passes for 83 yards and a TD, while Gunar Robinson booted a 38-yard field goal and went 3-for-3 on PATs.
Madison Parish 18, Opelousas 0
Jarvis Williams and Kendall Coleman each scored on a 10-yard run, and Madison Parish improved to 3-0 for the first time in school history by beating Opelousas.
