Richard, Mullens lead Southern Miss past Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) — Jalen Richard ran for a career-high 230 yards and four touchdowns, Nick Mullens threw four touchdown passes, and Southern Miss hung on to beat Texas State 56-50 Saturday night.
Richard’s 64-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter gave Southern Miss (2-1) a 14-point lead with just over six minutes to play. His four rushing touchdowns were the most for the Golden Eagles since Austin Davis ran for four against Houston in 2010.
Mullens had 333 yards and four touchdowns on 19-of-27 passing, tossing scores of 4 and 50 yards to Casey Martin. Martin finished with five receptions for 114 yards.
Tyler Jones threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more, leading Texas State (1-2) in rushing with 160 yards on 18 attempts. He completed 31 of 46 passes for 310 yards.
Southern Miss had 282 rushing yards and Texas State had 281.
The Bobcats led 25-21 at halftime, but Southern Miss countered with touchdowns on its first five second-half possessions. The teams combined for 1,204 total yards and 51 first downs.
Richard’s 64-yard run put Southern Miss ahead 56-42 with 6:23 remaining.
Texas State cut into the deficit with a safety and a quick scoring drive capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Demun Mercer with 4 seconds to go. Southern Miss recovered the ensuing onside kick and Mullens took a knee to run out the clock.
