VHS hosts college game
Vicksburg High will host a college softball game between Jackson State and East Mississippi Community College at its “Softball Swamp” field on Oct. 24. The game will be played as a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m., and admission is $2 at the gate.
Fall tennis program
The City of Vicksburg’s youth fall tennis program is under way at the Halls Ferry Park courts. The program will run Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 5 to 6 p.m., and is free. For more information, call Rick Shields at 601-618-4757.
Over the River Run
Registration is now open for the 27th Annual Over the River Run, a 5-mile run and race walk across the Old Mississippi River Bridge. The Over the River Run is scheduled for Oct. 10 at 8 a.m. at the Mississippi Welcome Center on Washington Street. A 1-mile children’s fun run will follow the 5-mile run and walk.
The entry fee is $25 for individuals before Oct. 1, or $30 after that date, and $15 for children 10-and-under. There’s also a $55 rate for families of as many as five people, and a $75 corporate rate.

Alcorn golf tourney
The Alcorn State University Alumni Foundation will host its 7th annual Purple & Gold Golf Tournament Oct. 16 at Clear Creek Golf Course. The two-person scramble will begin at 10 a.m. The registration fee is $100 per person, and the entry deadline is Friday.

VHS archery tryouts
Tryouts for the Vicksburg High girls archery team will be held Oct. 14 and 15, from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. each day, in the VHS Junior ROTC building. All archers must have a completed physical. For more information, email coach Pamela Piazza at pamela.piazza@vwsd.org.
Archery deer season opens Thursday
Mississippi’s archery deer season will begin Thursday in the Hill and Delta Zones. Longbows, recurves, compund bows and crossbows are all considered legal archery equipment and can be used during all hunting seasons for deer. There is no minimum or maximum draw weight, no minimum arrow length, and fixed or mechanical broadheads may be used.
The Hill Zone contains public and open lands east of Interstate 55 and north of Interstate 20 and east of U.S. 61, excluding areas south of U.S. 84 and east of Mississippi Highway 35.
The Delta Zone contains public and open lands west of Interstate 55 and north of Interstate 20, plus areas south of Interstate 20 and west of U.S. 61.
