The Vicksburg Gators’ path to the top of Region 2-5A hit a major roadblock Friday night.
The Gators lost to hapless Neshoba Central, 14-9, to suffer their second consecutive loss and a major setback in their quest for a top-two finish in the region and a home playoff game.
Vicksburg fell to 0-2 in Region 2-5A (3-3 overall) and must now likely run the table in its last five league games to have any chance at finishing first or second. At 0-2, the Gators might need to win four of their last five just to make the playoffs.
Vicksburg will host Lanier next Friday night, then hosts Ridgeland and plays two road games at Canton and Grenada before finishing the regular season at home against Holmes County Central.
In other Region 2-5A games Friday, Ridgeland beat Lanier 51-6; Grenada beat Germantown 16-5; and Holmes County Central beat Canton 55-22.
Grenada, Ridgeland and Holmes County Central are all 2-0 in region play, while Vicksburg, Canton and Lanier are winless. Neshoba (1-5 overall) is 1-1. The top four teams make the playoffs.
