Porters Chapel Academy lost for the seventh straight time Friday night, 38-0 to Benton Academy, but the result took a back seat to confusion and turmoil on a hectic day within the program.

Head coach Wayne Lynch was not on the sideline for the game and said via a text message Friday night that he plans to resign. He declined to comment further, saying he would wait until Monday to make an announcement about his future.

PCA athletic director Wade Patrick also said the school’s board and administration would wait until then to make a statement.

Junior high head coach Stacey Sykes coached the team Friday night, but said he wasn’t yet sure whether he would also be asked coach next week’s season finale at home against Amite School Center.

Sykes, who coached PCA’s junior high team to a 5-2 record this season, said he was proud of how the Eagles handled a difficult situation. They trailed 12-0 at halftime — one of their smallest halftime deficits of the season — before Benton Academy (5-4) took control in the second half.

Quarterback Isaiah Minor completed 8 of 9 passes for 28 yards, Patrick Minor had 28 yards receiving, and both Cole Pittman and Michael Brewer had four tackles.

“I accepted it today because I care about the kids. Life throws us difficult situations, and we need leaders to show us how to deal with those situations,” he said. “I was very proud of our kids’ effort and the way they handled a tough situation.”

Lynch took over as PCA’s coach in 2013 and has a 5-23 record. The Eagles, who only have two seniors and three juniors on the roster, have struggled with inexperience, injuries and a lack of depth this season and have not won on the field. Their one win in a 1-8 record came via forfeit when Riverdale did not have enough players to play their game on Aug. 28.
