Stanley Gordon ‘Opa’ Smith

Stanley Gordon “Opa” Smith died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015.

Mr. Smith was born in Greenville on Oct. 26, 1930. He was the son of the late Elmer Sidney Smith, Sr. and Myrtle Elizabeth Dawson Smith.

He served in the Navy for two years and the Air Force for four years. He married Barbara Jean Raines on Dec. 16, 1955.

Mr. Smith retired from the U. S. Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District and was a loving husband, a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He loved all animals and wildlife and enjoyed fishing with family and friends. Mr. Smith was a communicant of St. Paul Catholic Church.

He is survived by five children, Debbie Smith, Liz Taylor (Glenn), Terrie Falls (T.C.), Christy Smith, and Sean Smith (Brenda); grandchildren, Hope Phillips (Adam), Heather Schoenheit (Bill), Lauren Taylor, Anna Catherine Taylor, Jeremy Falls(Grace), Allie Falls, Samantha Smith and Stanley Bufkin; and great-grandchildren, Jordan and Chandler Ashley, Joseph and Jacon Schoenheit.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Barbara; a grandchild, Matthew Dawson Smith; and two brothers, Elmer Smith Jr. and Gaines Smith.

The family would like to thank his niece, Kathy McMichael, and caregivers Janet Andrews and Dorothy Maxwell for their loving care of their father.

A Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, at St. Paul Catholic Church with burial to follow in Green Lawn Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Riles Funeral Home, and Tuesday at St. Paul Catholic Church from 9:30 a.m. until the service.

Memorials may be made to Vicksburg Catholic School, 1900 Grove Street, Vicksburg, MS 39181.

Pallbearers will be Mark Smith, Chad Smith, Chris Smith, Stephen Smith, Chandler Ashley, Bobby Amborn and Charlie Amborn.
