PORT GIBSON — Maria Thornton Gaines died Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at Claiborne County Medical Center in Port Gibson. She was 92.

Mrs. Gaines was a member and choir member at Springhill M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mittie Thornton; husband, Henry A. Gaines; a son, Robert Barnes; three sisters, Catherine Reed, Loretta Mays and Rosie Lee Goldsberry; and two brothers, J.C. House, and S.T. Thornton.

Survivors include a son, George H. Thornton of Buffalo, New York; four daughters, Willie R. Thornton Green of Port Gibson, Cordelia Thornton-Haywood of Jackson, and Marie Thornton-Turner and Glenda Thornton-Callahan, both of Buffalo, New York; two stepdaughters, Mary A. Gaines Thomas of Jackson and Dorothy Thomas of Bradenton, Florida; a daughter-in-law; 25 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, at Springhill M.B. Church in Port Gibson, with the Rev. Joseph Brown officiating. Burial will be at the Church Cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. of Port Gibson.

Visitation will be Friday, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home, Saturday from 1p.m. until service time at the church.
