Vikings lose to South Delta in overtime

Warren Central fought an uphill battle and lost Tuesday night.

The Vikings let a late lead slip away in the final 30 seconds of regulation and wound up losing 59-54 on the road to South Delta.

South Delta hit a 3-pointer — after it had missed one and regained possession on a jump ball — to send the game to overtime, then outscored Warren Central 13-8 in the extra period.

“We made a lot of mental mistakes We gave up a lot of offensive rebounds. We did not close out well on defense,” Warren Central coach Bruce Robinson said.

Chavis Smith led Warren Central (1-1) with 17 points. Jacques Jones added 13, JaQuan Woods nine and Travonte Miller seven. Smith and Miller each hit free throws in the final minute to give the Vikings a three-point lead, but they couldn’t hang on.

Amber Gaston and Dee Dee Caldwell scored 15 points apiece, Da’Sha McGloster added 14 points and seven steals, and Warren Central routed South Delta for its second straight win.

Warren Central will play Raymond Thursday at 6 p.m. in its home opener.
