LORMAN — Reginald Johnson hit a go-ahead layup with 2:49 remaining in the second overtime, and Alcorn State fended off Tougaloo 122-117 in its season opener Thursday night.
Johnson finished with a game-high 30 points and seven rebounds for the Braves, while Marquis Vance had 26 points and 21 rebounds. Vance went 15-for-19 from the free throw line.
Jarnell Anderson and Quintarius Porter each scored 21 points for Tougaloo.
The teams combined to shoot 136 free throws. That total, as well as their 90 combined made free throws, would both be NCAA Division I records but will not be recorded as such because Tougaloo is an NAIA school. For team records to count, both teams must be NCAA Division I members.
The NCAA Division I record for made free throws is 88, set by Morehead State and Cincinnati in 1956. The record for combined attempts is 130, set by Northern Arizona and Arizona in 1953.
Tougaloo went 51-for-75 from the line and Alcorn was 39-for-61.
