Missy Gators can’t get past Terry

Despite a shaky first week of the season, the Vicksburg Missy Gators aren’t necessarily a bad team. They just had some trouble with a really good one Thursday night.

Dominique Jackson scored 16 points, Tekayla Tassian added 14, and Terry ran away from the Missy Gators for a 60-45 victory.

It was the second consecutive loss for Vicksburg (1-2), which started a four-game road swing and won’t play another home game until Dec. 5 against Warren Central. Coach Barbara Hartzog gave credit to Terry, which she said was simply better — and, more importantly, bigger. Jackson and Tassian are both 5-foot-10, as is freshman Cathy Burse who scored 11 points. Vicksburg has one player that tall.

“Terry is a good team. They were big and they were just killing us inside. The first 14 points they scored were to the post. They just outsized us,” Hartzog said. “We played hard, but they were just so much more talented than us and bigger than us.”

Point guard Keiyana Gaskin led Vicksburg with 15 points and five assists. Karry Callahan had 10 points, 20 rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots.

Terry (1-1) won 24 games and reached the Class 6A quarterfinals last season. Especially this early in the season, Hartzog said, losing to a team with that pedigree isn’t the worst thing.

“If we can take that and learn from it, we’ll be fine,” Hartzog said. “I would rather play those kinds of teams than the weaker ones. Play a stronger team, and hopefully we can learn from it.”

Kirk Parker had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds to help Vicksburg (3-0) remain undefeated with a win over Terry (1-1).

Joe Thomas added 14 points and four steals for the Gators, who will play at Yazoo City on Tuesday night.
