Vikings still looking to develop after Wingfield loss

Published 9:49 am Wednesday, December 9, 2015

Unlike many of Warren Central’s games this season, the one against Wingfield was close all throughout. However, they were a three-point field goal away from going into overtime losing to the Falcons 62-59.

With just under four seconds in the game, the Vikings were in position to tie. Wingfield missed two free throws and Jaquan Woods secured the rebound. Jessie Wilson stepped up the three-point line but the Falcons were there to force a well-contested shot, which went over the rim.

Vikings coach Bruce Robinson said the game was nip and tuck.

“I thought we played well in spurts, had a few turnovers there at the end that kind of hurt us,” Robinson said. “We missed a couple of big free throws in the fourth quarter.”

Wingfield kept up with the Vikings by making five 3-pointers and made their free throws to stay into the game. The Falcons also found success when driving the lane.

“We couldn’t keep them out of the lane on the drive. A lot of time when they went into the lane we either stood in front of them or they’d get fouled.”

Shunterrance Walton lead the team in scoring with 20 points, followed by Chavis Smith with another eight and Wilson ended up with five for the night.

While Walton had a good night, the Vikings are still young and trying to develop as a team. They have time to iron the kinks out and are working toward January and playoff time.

“The biggest thing is we don’t have the edge but we are developing some toughness. We’re trying to get our edge,” Robinson said.

Amber Gaston put up 23 points off 10-of-15 field goals and 3-of-5 free throws, grabbed seven rebounds and added two blocks to her stat line against Wingfield. Chae White followed up Gatson’s performance with 12 points and Cocoa Fultz scored another 11.

Aside from the big numbers, coach Jackie Martin-Glass said the team didn’t play as aggressive as they should have and gave up too many second chance opportunities. The Lady Vikes will build off the win heading into a big game against Brandon on Friday.

Warren Central had 18 steals and rebounds, but also recorded 16 turnovers.
