Other positive happenings in the River City this week include:

• Anchuca, one of the Vicksburg’s oldest homes celebrated its 60th anniversary as a tour home Thursday with the unveiling of a state historic marker and free tours for travelers and residents. About 50 people watched Anchuca owner Tom Pharr assisted by Bertram Hayes-Davis, great-great-grandson of Jefferson Davis, unveil the state marker dedicated to Pharr’s maternal grandmother, Gladys Marie Garner Barnette, who donated the money to pay for the marker. Built in Greek revival style in 1830 by local politician J.W. Maudlin, Anchuca was the first columned mansion in Vicksburg and the first historic home in the state to be turned into a bed and breakfast inn.

Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr., who attended the ceremony for the city, claimed Anchuca as one of the city’s greatest assets to the industry of tourism.

• Coaches pick eight Vicksburg High School Football Players for All-Region 2-5A. Wide receiver Te’Darious Brown, cornerback Paul Wilson, linebacker Antonio Brown, defensive end Jomon O’Neal and punter Greg Hayden were selected to the All-Region 2-5A first team and defensive lineman Michael Sullivan, wide receiver Raheam Moore and defensive back Markel Haggard were on the All-Region second team.

• Tim Cantwell, owner and developer of The Lofts at First National, accepted the 2015 Best of Mississippi Award for renovation/reconstruction of a commercial or multi-family building at the annual Home Builders Association of Mississippi Awards Dinner in Jackson. To be considered for the award, pictures and a description of the work done on the building had to be submitted and Cantwell said one of the reasons he decided to submit the building for consideration was because he thought it could bring another positive light into Vicksburg with exposure for the building and the city.
