The St. Aloysius Flashes mashed on the gas in the second half Friday night and blew away Cathedral.

Bottin finished with three goals, including two in the second half.

“He played the game of his life, with his speed and everything” St. Al coach Scott Mathis said of the sophomore Bottin. “We all played together. It was a remarkable turnaround from yesterday to today.”

St. Al (5-0) was playing for the second day in a row. It muddled through a 4-1 win over Indianola Academy on Thursday and went into halftime of Friday’s game tied at 1.

Bottin’s goal broke the Flashes out of their funk, however. He added one more goal during the second-half flurry, while Lofton Varner and Kieran Theriot also found the net. Jack Dowe assisted on all five goals.

Goal keeper Townsend Derivaux made three saves against only four shots. The one goal he gave up came in the first half when he came out of the box to challenge an offensive attack and lost.

“I think they were feeling them out in the first half,” Mathis said. “We got it out in front and we’d try to take them on by ourselves and lose the ball. I told them at halftime don’t leave the middle open and control the ball. The second half, every ball and every goal kick they were right there.”

St. Al will play three games next week as the pace of its schedule picks up considerably. It’ll play road games at Washington School and River Oaks on Monday and Wednesday, respectively, and then hosts Richland High School on Thursday.
