Vikings kick Vicksburg

There is no official homecoming celebration during soccer season, but Warren Central’s boys’ soccer team celebrated one anyway.
Nine players scored goals and the Vikings posted their ninth shutout of the season as they routed crosstown rival Vicksburg High 9-0 Friday night.
The game was moved from Vicksburg’s Memorial Stadium to WC’s Viking Stadium and was Warren Central’s first home game this season. A few early-season dates were canceled or relocated because of weather or schedule conflicts with football, forcing Warren Central to play 14 consecutive road games.
The Vikings came through that stretch just fine, however. Friday’s win made them 12-2-1 heading into the Division 4-6A opener at home Saturday at noon against Greenville and what’s likely to be the division championship game Tuesday night at Clinton.
“To have this many wins and not play at home, I’m really proud of the guys. We’ve been playing well,” WC coach Greg Head said. “Everybody’s clicking. Everybody’s healthy. We’ve got a new formation we’re running and everybody seems to be doing well on it. We’re just looking good right now.”
Graham Tweedle had a goal and two assists for Warren Central, while Jacob Cochran and Braylen Greer each had a goal and an assist.
Other goal scorers were Jack Richardson, Hunt Holdiness, Nick Wright, Theodor Stang, Sean Dixon and Max Wamsley. The Vikings outshot Vicksburg 46-0 and led 6-0 at halftime. They scored five goals in the first 17 minutes of the game.
Vicksburg goal keeper Parker Demeranville made 18 saves.
In a game that was a mismatch from the opening whistle, Wright said the Vikings did a good job challenging themselves to maintain their focus.
“You just stick to your game and don’t be selfish,” Wright said. “Everybody wants to score because they can. We worked the ball pretty well.”
Vicksburg, meanwhile, took another hit in a season of turmoil within the program.
Friday’s girls’ game was canceled because Vicksburg was placed on probation by the Mississippi High School Activities Association following an incident in a game against Murrah on Dec. 4. The Missy Gators had to cancel four games, the last of which was Friday’s contest with Warren Central. They’ll play today at home against Magee at 11 a.m.
On the boys’ side, Vicksburg’s record dropped to 1-6-3 with its third consecutive loss since New Year’s. The Gators have been outscored 29-2 in those games.
Earlier this week, assistant coach Kristen Williams was promoted to head coach because Tyrone Hargro has apparently quit. Williams said she has not had any contact with Hargro, who was in his first season as coach, since November and he has not been at games or practices.
Along with a young roster and only a handful of returning players, Williams said this has been a challenging season to say the least.
“The inexperience has just gotten to us. And then some of the things we did at practice, we’re not doing in games. It’s just frustrating,” Williams said. “We’re seeing a little progress. It’s just not where it needs to be right now from the work that we’ve put in. But considering I just started working with them the week before Thanksgiving, this is awesome.”
