At least two barges are believed sunk after a 30-barge tow carrying dry goods, possibly grain and coal struck the old U.S. 80 Bridge over the Mississippi River about 8:41 a.m. today, Warren County Emergency Management John Elfer said.
He said the tow operated by American Commercial Barge Lines was southbound on the river when it hit a bridge support on the Louisiana side of the river, causing the tow to break. The barges believed sunk apparently went down south of the bridge. No one was injured.
Bridge superintendent Herman Smith said the company’s towboat was attempting to gather the barges with help from a fleet boat from Ergon.
