Vicksburg dance class should be an inspiration for us all

We all need to exercise, but sometimes that’s just plain boring — lifting weights, walking, doing cardio on machines. Oh, the monotony of it all.

Kudos to Crystal Moulder, who has found a way to have fun and still achieve the health benefits sought from exercise.

Moulder teaches a hip-hop dance class at Wyatt’s Gym in Vicksburg. It’s become so popular, up to 60 women attend each of the two weekly sessions.

Moulder said her reward for teaching the class is getting to see the results in the form of the increased confidence of her students as their hard work pays off with a healthier body.

Maybe when people get together and sweat, they form some kind of bond. Moulder said the students in her classes become close knit and widen their social circle.

You don’t have to attend a hip-hop dance class to get fit, though doing so sounds like a lot of fun.

We urge you to find some type of exercise that interests you and take a baby step. Moulder said she has seen a number of students who come into her class with health-related diseases and severely out of shape, unable to get through an entire song. However, if they will keep it up, little by little, they will be able to accomplish more, will see results and gain confidence to reach their health goals.

One of her students, who now helps her teach the class, began 85 pounds overweight and out of shape. She enjoyed the dancing and music so much, she kept at it, thus her excellent results.

The lesson for us all is to just do something. Start small. Find some type of physical activity that interests you. You don’t have to join a gym or take a hip-hop dance class. Don’t overdo it. Let your body build up its stamina slowly.

Let’s follow the lead of the students in Crystal Moulder’s hip-hop dance class and take a step toward getting healthy this year.
