“We do a musical every year,” said Tracy Smithey, one of the choir directors at the school.

“Last year, we did ‘Tarzan,’ based on the Disney animated film. We’ve also done musicals like ‘Annie.’”

Smithey said the “Wizard of Oz” was selected for this year’s musical because it uses a large cast.

“You’re able to get a lot of kids involved who want to participate because you have a lot of extras for the munchkins and the people in OZ,” she said. “And you are able to find enough talented people for the lead roles.

“Also, it’s my favorite story, and I’ve always wanted to put it on,” she said.

She said the cast includes 30 high school students, plus 40 students from area elementary schools, who will portray munchkins.

The leading roles include Kenzie Irons, Dorothy; Warner Buxton, the Scarecrow; Jamison Watson, the Cowardly Lion; Jadarius Flagg, the Tin Woodsman; Zaria Neal, the Good Witch of the North; Kionna Taylor, the Wicked Witch of the West; and Tevin Sylvester, Oz.

The story is about Dorothy, who tries to run away from home to protect her dog, Toto from a mean neighbor and is knocked unconscious during a tornado and transported to a land where her friends from Kansas take on different characters. After a series of adventures, which includes defeating the Wicked Witch of the West, she recovers back in her home.
