After two Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships and a trip to Atlanta for the inaugural Celebration Bowl, Alcorn coach Jay Hopson’s success in Lorman has led his name to be attached to a couple of vacant coaching positions in the region.

Most recently, Hopson was attached to the assistant coaching vacancy at Mississippi State University.

Bill Martin, media relations coordinator at Mississippi State, has confirmed there is an opening for an assistant coach, but has denied an agreement between the university and Hopson.

“There’s been no official offer made on that position,” Martin said.

Hopson did not return calls made on behalf of The Vicksburg Post.

Martin said the university would announce the hiring of a new assistant coach in a press release and on social media.

Back in December, the Monroe News-Star reported Hopson was among 35 finalists who applied and one of five applicants to receive an interview for the Louisiana-Monroe vacancy.

Matt Viator, a former assistant for the Atlanta Falcons filled the position on Dec. 14.
