Weather conditions made for a beautiful week in the River City and before students get spring fever, on Wednesday, the Vicksburg-Warren Chamber of Commerce named Angela Coleman elementary educator of the year and Cheryl Israel Grant, secondary educator of the year during the monthly Chamber luncheon at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

Both teachers were each awarded $1,000, which was donated by Ameristar Casino.

Beechwood Elementary principal, Tamikia Billings said Coleman, who is a fifth grade teacher at the School, is one of the best teachers she’s ever seen.

“I just think her genuine love for what she does and her passion for teaching and learning exuded everywhere,” Billings said.

This is Coleman’s third year of teaching.

Grant, who has been an educator for 44 years, was first chosen to represent her school by her peers, then selected by a panel of retired educators to receive the top award.

“I’ve been teaching for a long time,” Grant said.

“Teachers don’t get to hear thank you very often. It made me feel wonderful to know we’re appreciated.”

On Friday, local Girl Scouts kicked off their cookie drive at Kroger and cookies will be available for purchase until Sunday, March 13.

The eight Girl Scout troops in Warren County typically sell 20,000 boxes of cookies a year and the cost for a box of cookies is $4. Selections include Savannah Smiles, Samoa, Thin Mints, Do-si-dos, Trefoils, Rah-Rah Raisins, and Tagalongs.

Other happenings this week include:

• Porters Chapel Academy kicked off their baseball season with a win. Brayden Ray’s two-run double was part of a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning that carried the Eagles to an 8-6 victory over Tri-County in their season opener.

• The Missy Gators stunned top-seeded Ridgeland 47-45, Tuesday in the first round of the Division 4-5A tournament.

With the win, Vicksburg (12-15) advanced to the championship game.
