Lifeguarding class
Registration is now open for an American Red Cross lifeguard certification class that will be held March 28 through April 8 at the Purks YMCA off of Clay Street. The 30-hour class will meet from 6 to 8:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, for two weeks.
Attendance at each session is mandatory for certification.
Students participating in the class must be at least 15 years old or turning that age no later than April 8, 2016. Candidates must also complete a strength and endurance test that includes a 300-yard swim using the front crawl and breast strokes, and timed strength skills.

Adult softball league
Registration for the City of Vicksburg’s adult softball league is now open and will continue through April 15. Registration packets can be picked up at the Parks and Recreation Department offices at 100 Army-Navy Drive, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The cost per team is $175, with an extra $10 fee for Warren County residents who live outside the city limits, and a $20 fee for residents from Sharkey, Issaquena and Claiborne counties. A mandatory coaches meeting will be held on April 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation offices. All teams must have a representative at this meeting.

Umps, scorekeepers needed
The Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department is looking for umpires and scorekeepers for the 2016 youth and adult softball and baseball seasons. For more information, call Joseph Graves at 601-634-4514.
River City Showcase
Triumph Ministries will host the inaugural River City Showcase basketball tournament April 9 at Vicksburg High School. The event will feature senior players from more than 20 area high schools. For more information, visit TMIVicksburg.weebly.com.
USM offers ticket prizes
The Southern Miss Department of Athletics is offering incentives for fans that purchase or renew football season tickets by April 1. Fans that buy their tickets by that date will receive an autographed trading card of new head coach and Vicksburg native Jay Hopson, as well as two tickets to any regular-season home baseball game of their choosing.
There will also be drawings for prizes including two seats in the athletic director’s booth for the spring game, and sideline passes for the spring game. A grand prize of a signed football jersey and lunch with Hopson will also be awarded.
