HATTIESBURG — Tuesday’s matchup with Southeastern Conference opponent Alabama wasn’t just another game for Southern Miss, and it didn’t treat it like one.
The Golden Eagles tied a season-high with 15 hits and rolled over the Crimson Tide 9-2 at Pete Taylor Park.
Jake Sandlin went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, Dylan Burdeaux homered, and the Golden Eagles (14-4) sent a season-high crowd of 3,577 home happy.
“You can’t ask for more,” said catcher Chuckie Robinson, who drove in a career-high four runs on two singles and a sacrifice fly. “Our pitching did well. Our offense did well. Our defense did well. We just kind of worked off each other, trusted each other to get the job done.”
Southern Miss beat Alabama (11-5) for the fourth consecutive time, and with a win over Auburn earlier this year, it now has eight wins in a row over Southeastern Conference opponents.
USM has three games left this season against SEC teams. It’ll play Mississippi State and Ole Miss in Pearl on March 29 and April 5, respectively, and then travel to Oxford for another game against Ole Miss on April 13.
“I have no idea,” Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said of the Golden Eagles’ recent run against the SEC. “Steady wins the race. We’re never too high, never too low, and if we can stay consistent off this win, we have a chance to win a lot of ballgames.”
Alabama came into the game with a pitching staff boasting a collective 1.60 ERA. Instead, it was USM’s Nick Johnson (1-0) who turned in the stoutest effort.
The senior right-hander allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings. He walked two, gave up six hits and struck out five. It’s the second consecutive midweek outing in which Johnson has allowed only two earned runs.
“He did a great job,” Robinson said. “He got his curveball over for strikes, his change-up for strikes and his fastball. When you’ve got three pitches for strikes in the zone, you’re going to be hard to hit.”
The game was scoreless through three innings, then Southern Miss surged ahead beginning in the fourth.
Chase Scott’s RBI single broke up the scoreless tie and Robinson added a sacrifice fly. After Alabama got a run back in the top of the fifth inning, Nick Dawson’s RBI single in the bottom half put USM ahead 3-1.
Robinson delivered a two-run single and Burdeaux hit a solo homer as Southern Miss scored three times in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Scott finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Tim Lynch was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Hunter Slater also had three hits.
“Southern Miss has a really good club and they played really well tonight,” Alabama coach Mitch Gaspard said. “They outplayed us, particularly from the middle of the game on. Their offense was really good tonight, and we didn’t have an answer for them.”
Ole Miss 8, UAB 1
Henri Lartigue went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, Cameron Dishon was 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Ole Miss (16-1) beat UAB (6-10) for its 11th consecutive victory.
Colby Bortles also drove in a pair of runs for the Rebels. He hit one of the Rebels’ five doubles.
Freshman Andy Pagnozzi (3-0) allowed one run on two hits in 6 1/3 innings to get the win. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out four.
“Pagnozzi was really able to command the fastball and locate on both sides of the plate,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “I was proud of his composure and performance tonight. He’s been fantastic all season long.”
Eastern Kentucky 16, Mississippi St. 12
Shea Sullivan hit a tiebreaking single, and Eastern Kentucky went on to score three more times in the top of the 10th inning as it beat Mississippi State in a midweek game in Starkville.
Mississippi State (12-4-1) was coming off a three-game sweep of No. 9 Oregon and had a four-game winning streak overall. It led 12-6 through seven innings, but gave up six runs in the eighth inning and four in the 10th.
Sullivan finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored for Eastern Kentucky (8-8). Kyle Nowlin and Mandy Alvarez homered, and each of the first seven batters in the lineup had at least two hits.
For Mississippi State, Nathaniel Lowe was 3-for-4 with a home run and seven RBIs. Gavin Collins also homered, while Jacob Robson had three hits and scored three runs.
Lowe’s seven RBIs were the most by an MSU player since 2010.
