In a span of five pitches Friday night, Ole Miss’ long winning streak disappeared.

Max Bartlett hit a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning, and then scored on a single by Derek Lance as Tennessee beat the Rebels 3-2 in the opener of a Southeastern Conference series in Knoxville.

Ole Miss (17-2, 0-1 SEC) had its 12-game winning streak snapped, and suffered just its second loss of the season.

Tennessee (12-5, 1-0) won for the fifth time in six games.

J.B. Woodman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Ole Miss. He led off the eighth inning with a home run to tie the game at 2.

The score stayed tied until the ninth. Ole Miss closer Wyatt Short struck out the first two batters before Bartlett hit a 1-0 pitch into left field for a double.

Short threw a ball and a strike to Lance before the Tennessee center fielder hit a soft liner to center that landed in front of Woodman. Bartlett hustled home from second base and scored without a play.

Before Friday, Short had not allowed a two-out hit this season.

Tennessee only had six hits in the game and was otherwise controlled by Ole Miss’ pitching staff. Starter Brady Bramlett allowed two runs, one earned, in 5 2/3 innings and struck out nine.

Four Ole Miss pitchers combined to allow three walks and struck out a season-high 14 batters. Lance had struck out twice in three at-bats before his game-winning hit.

“It’s a surreal moment. It still hasn’t hit me quite yet,” Lance said. “Bramlett had done a good job mixing in and out, up and down, but we were able to get him up in the pitch count and battle, and put together some two-out hits.”

Michael Fitzsimmons had two hits for Ole Miss, and Tate Blackman drove in the team’s first run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

Tennessee reliever Jon Lipinski earned the win. He allowed one run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings, and worked around some trouble in the top of the ninth to keep the game tied. He struck out three and walked one.

Tennessee starter Zach Warren had eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
