Teachers, students volunteer Saturday mornings to improve test scores

We all love our weekends. Who doesn’t?
For those among who work or go to school Monday through Friday, the thought of getting up early and heading back to work or class on Saturday morning isn’t a pleasant one.
However, that’s exactly what a group of Vicksburg High School teachers and students did last Saturday.
A group of about five teachers and 20 students gathered in the high school library Saturday morning, the teachers volunteering their time to tutor students who needed some extra studying to pass the state’s standardized tests in the subjects of algebra I, English II, history and biology.
Teachers were happy to see the students show up for the tutoring session. One said it showed the students are motivated and care about learning and passing the examination.
This community should be happy about that, too. And, we are just as happy that these teachers care enough about their students to volunteer their time to provide them with a little extra help.
Saturday’s wasn’t the first such session for teachers and students. One teacher said it was her fourth Saturday to volunteer. One of the teachers said she liked the Saturday sessions, rather than tutor students during the typical school day, because the Saturday sessions provide more one-on-one time with students.
It’s gratifying to know our public school system is made up of quality teachers — and students — who are willing to put in the extra effort to improve their test scores.
Think about what it would take for you to volunteer your Saturday mornings to go to work or to take a class. Perhaps that will put into perspective the effort by the students and teachers at Vicksburg High.
That extra effort goes a long way for our community.
