Natchez clobbers Vicksburg

Vicksburg High’s baseball winning streak was stopped, abruptly, at one on Saturday afternoon.

Natchez pitchers Tommie Wells and Christopher Scott combined on a six-inning no-hitter, and the Bulldogs scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 13-2 victory over Vicksburg.

The Gators (2-14) had won their previous game against Lanier to stop a 10-game losing streak, but were never really in Saturday’s matinee in Natchez. They committed six errors, including three in the first inning.

Shavokee Herrington went 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored for Natchez, while Jadarius Ivory was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and three runs scored. Wells drove in two runs as well as pitching the first three innings.

Vicksburg scored a pair of unearned runs in the third to get within 6-2, but Natchez answered with three runs in the fourth inning to make it 9-2. Ivory doubled in a run and scored on a passed ball to spark the fourth-inning rally.

Wells struck out two, walked three, and allowed the two unearned runs. Scott pitched the last three innings before the game ended by the run rule and didn’t allow a hit or a run. He walked one batter and struck out four.

Vicksburg pitchers Marshall Banks and Chris Farrish only walked one batter and struck out five combined, but allowed eight hits and were undone by the shoddy defense behind them.

Jarren McCaplin and Christian Dunn scored Vicksburg’s runs. McCaplin was hit by a pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Branden Humphrey, while Dunn walked and scored when DeWayne Sims hit a grounder to short that was booted for an error.

The Gators will play Neshoba Central Monday at 7 p.m. at Bazinsky Field in a makeup date of a game rained out two weeks ago.

Germantown 10, Warren Central 9

Hayden Grimes drove in five runs, including a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning, to lead Germantown (11-4) past Warren Central (11-5).

Warren Central wasted a six-run lead in the sixth inning and lost for just the second time in its last eight games. Its pitchers walked or hit 14 batters.

“We had nine hits. We outhit them. We just pitched poorly,” Warren Central coach Conner Douglas said.

The Vikings will host Clinton Monday at 7 p.m. in a game rescheduled from Friday because of rain. They’ll then play two more division games at home on Tuesday when they face Murrah in a doubleheader.
