While Clinton started mashing the softball, Warren Central watched its division championship hopes stomped into the dirt.
Tagen Remmell and Kaylei Peterson both homered during a seven-run fifth inning Tuesday, and Clinton went on to rout the Lady Vikes 12-2 to all but clinch the Division 4-6A championship.
The teams play again next Thursday at WC’s Lucy Young Field, but Warren Central (6-6, 2-1 Division 4-6A) would need to beat Clinton (12-3, 2-0) by at least 10 runs to have a chance at winning the division via a tiebreaker.
The Lady Vikes also have two division games before then, Thursday at home against Murrah and Tuesday at home against Greenville. They’ll also play at Terry on Saturday, all before Clinton comes to town.
Clinton has won 13 consecutive games against Warren Central dating to 2010.
Warren Central drew first blood Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Brooke Patterson doubled and scored on a base hit by Sarah Kate Smith. Clinton answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, however, and never trailed again.
The Lady Arrows led 3-1 in the fifth inning and turned out the lights on the Lady Vikes, both figuratively and literally.
After a 30-minute delay caused by a power failure, Remmell hit a three-run home run to give Clinton a 6-1 advantage. Peterson hit a solo homer two batters later, and Clinton tacked on three more unearned runs before the inning was over to blow the game wide open.
Remmell finished the game 2-for-2 with a double, home run and three RBIs, and Peterson was 2-for-3 with a home run, double and three RBIs. Katlyn Lott was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
For Warren Central, Patterson finished 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, and a run scored. After scoring WC’s first run, she had an RBI single in the seventh inning.
