OXFORD — One perfect weekend put Ole Miss right back in the thick of the Southeastern Conference West Division race.
J.B. Woodman hit a two-run home run, and Ole Miss scored five runs with two outs to beat Arkansas 8-7 Sunday to finish a three-game sweep.
The Rebels (25-7, 6-6 Southeastern Conference) never trailed at any point during the series. It’s the first time Ole Miss has swept Arkansas (20-12, 4-8) since 2009, as well as the first time ever at Swayze Field.
Perhaps more importantly, Ole Miss won its first SEC series since the opening weekend against Tennessee. Ole Miss has won five in a row following a five-game losing streak, and is now two games back of first-place Mississippi State in the West Division.
The Rebels will host Southern Miss on Wednesday, and then play Alabama in a three-game series in Tuscaloosa beginning Friday night.
Woodman went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Rebels on Sunday, while Will Golsan doubled, singled, and drove in four runs.
Michael Bernal homered for Arkansas, which cut a 4-0 deficit down to a single run by scoring three times in the fifth inning, and then closed to within a run twice more after Ole Miss had extended the lead.
The Rebels kept the Razorbacks at bay, however. Reliever Andy Pagnozzi (5-1) got out of the fifth-inning jam and earned the win. He allowed two runs on two hits and a walk, while striking out three in 2 1/3 innings.
Will Stokes got two outs in the ninth for his fourth save after Arkansas scored a pair of runs to make it 8-7.
USM 12, Middle Tennessee 11
Storme Cooper scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning as Southern Miss (25-8, 11-1 Conference USA) rallied for a walk-off win and a sweep of Middle Tennessee (14-18, 2-10).
Southern Miss scored three times in the ninth inning on only one hit. Middle Tennessee’s Cody Puckett and Caleb Smith combined to walk four batters, including Nick Dawson with the bases loaded.
Dylan Burdeaux’s RBI single tied the game at 11, and then Smith uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Cooper to score the winning run.
Burdeaux finished the game 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored for Southern Miss. Tim Lynch had three hits and drove in three runs, and Dawson also had three RBIs.
Austin Dennis went 3-for-6 with five RBIs for Middle Tennessee — four of them on an inside-the-park grand slam in the fifth inning.
The sweep left Southern Miss alone in first place in Conference USA. It has a two-game lead over Florida Atlantic (23-6, 9-3) and Rice (20-11, 9-3).
