A low-pressure system moved through the Vicksburg/Warren County area dumping more than 5 inches of rain in less than 24 hours, causing local flooding, mudslides and downing trees.

Meteorologist Anna Wolverton, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Jackson, said the weather service gauge at the Vicksburg-Tallulah Regional Airport indicated 5.37 inches of rain fell in the area, which was a single day record for the site. The previous record was 1.75 inches in 2013.

She said Tuesday morning the rain had moved south of Vicksburg and the skies were expected to clear Tuesday afternoon. Wolverton said rain is predicted to resume Wednesday and continue through Thursday with a slight chance of showers Friday before clearing for the weekend.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said the torrential rains caused water to cover the intersection of Paxton Road and Old Highway 27, and Redwood Road near the Northeast Volunteer Fire Department Redwood fire station was blocked by mud and water about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. He said a mudslide on Whatley Hollow Road in the Redwood area blocked several residents from leaving their homes Tuesday morning, and a county road crew was clearing the road.

“It was just a case of the drainage systems not being able to handle the amount of rain we got over a short period,” Pace said. “In the Eagle Lake area, water filled the ditches on Sea Island Drive and was just up to the edge of the road.

“On Red Oak Drive, water was in the street and in the front yards of homes. We had some reports of trees down, but not as many as we had last month, because we didn’t have the wind with this front like we did last month.”

Inside the city, the heavy rain caused street flooding on Sky Farm Avenue and a mudslide on North Washington Street that closed all of one lane and partially blocked another. City street supervisor Carl Harris said a city crew was working to clear the street. He said crews were also working to clear a downed tree from Briar Lane.

Street Superintendent Skipper Whittington said trees were also reported down on Lake Hill Drive and Bazinsky Road.
