JV baseball report

WC 4, Madison Central 4 – Christian Oakes singled and scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning as Warren Central’s junior varsity team salvaged a tie with Madison Central. Matthew Newcomb went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Warren Central.

WC 5, Madison Central 4 – Hank Holdiness doubled, drove in two runs and scored two to lead Warren Central’s eighth- and ninth-grade team past Madison Central. Sean Daily pitched three scoreless innings for WC, which scored four runs in the first inning before holding off a late rally by Madison Central.

VHS ninth in archery

Zac Coomes totaled a score of 255, Makayla Williams had a 259, and Vicksburg High finished ninth in the MHSAA state archery competition last week in Jackson. Chad Ross (251), Marshall Banks (248) and David White (247) were the other high scorers for VHS’ boys’ team. On the girls’ side, Williams was followed by Danielle Shehane, Taylor Johnson (243) and Kaitlyn Brown (241). The Gators totaled 2,932 points as a team.

The 14th annual Play 2 Wynn Basketball Camp is scheduled for June 20-24 at Vicksburg High School. The camp, which is designed to teach fundamentals, is for boys and girls ages 6-17, and the registration is $100. It will be under the direction of Donna Brown-Wynn, a Vicksburg native who played and coached at Mississippi State and Belmont University.

WC volleyball tryouts

Tryouts for Warren Central’s varsity girls volleyball team will be held April 21 and 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. in Gym A at Warren Central High School. All players must have a completed physical form.

There will be a meeting Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for the parents of all prospective players. For more information, call coach Matt Gullett at 601-638-3372.

Riverfest 5K Run

Registration is now open for the Rhythm Run at RiverFest 5K. The 5K run and race walk will take place Saturday at 8 a.m. in downtown Vicksburg, beginning at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center on Adams Street. There is also a 1-mile fun run for children 12 and under. The registration fee is $20 for the run and walk, or $15 for the 1-mile fun run.

Adult softball league

Registration for the City of Vicksburg’s adult softball league is now open and will continue through Friday. Registration packets can be picked up at the Parks and Recreation Department offices at 100 Army-Navy Drive, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The cost per team is $175, with an extra $10 fee for Warren County residents who live outside the city limits, and a $20 fee for residents from Sharkey, Issaquena and Claiborne counties. For more information call 601-634-4514.
