BILOXI — Mississippi State went down south and deep into the night for a win Wednesday.

Jake Mangum’s RBI single in the bottom of the 14th inning brought in Ryan Gridley with the game-winning run and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe.

The game, played at MGM Park in Biloxi, lasted 4 hours and 47 minutes and was Mississippi State’s longest of the season. The teams combined to use 17 pitchers who threw 397 pitches.

Keegan James (3-0), who worked a scoreless top half of the 14th inning, got the win. He was the last of nine pitchers used by the Bulldogs, none of whom pitched more than three innings.

“We used a bunch of arms that needed some work,” Mississippi State coach John Cohen said. “We really didn’t need to play 14 innings, but we got a lot of guys a lot of good work in pressure situations. You have a lot of games like this in the SEC, so it’s good to be in these types of situations.”

The parade of pitchers on both sides shut down each other’s lineups. Louisiana-Monroe (15-22) only had six hits, and Mississippi State (25-12-1) had seven. ULM’s pitchers walked four batters and struck out eight, while Mississippi State’s staff walked two and struck out 16.

The stalemate finally ended in the bottom of the 14th inning, when Gridley doubled with one out and advanced to third on an error by the shortstop. After a groundout and a walk, Mangum singled to right field to bring in the game’s first and only run.

Gridley raised his arms as he crossed home plate and jumped into the waiting arms of his teammates, and Mangum was mobbed in the infield after touching first base.

“This is a big park and you really can’t hit the ball in the air here,” Cohen said. “We did that too much in this game.”

Ole Miss 8, Murray St. 3

Chad Smith had nine strikeouts in five scoreless innings, Cameron Dishon went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Ole Miss (28-10) racked up another non-conference win by beating Murray State (17-21).

Ole Miss won its 21st non-conference game of the season and improved to 10-1 in midweek games.

After a scoreless first inning, the Rebels scored all of their runs in a four-inning span. Errol Robinson doubled and scored on a single by Ryan Olenek as part of a three-run outburst in the fifth inning that put the Rebels ahead 8-0.

After Smith left the game, Ole Miss’ bullpen kept Murray State in check. Reliever Connor Green had five strikeouts in two innings, and Andy Pagnozzi didn’t allow a run in the last 1 1/3 innings.

In all, Ole Miss’ pitching staff allowed five hits and five walks, and struck out 17 batters.

Murray State scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 20-inning scoreless streak by Ole Miss’ pitchers.
