City residents will get an opportunity to give their opinions on the progress of city government and get an update on projects in the city at a public meeting 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Vicksburg Auditorium.
“We’re going to do a PowerPoint and we’re going to present a host of things to the public,” said North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield, who called the meeting. “It’s in an effort to get some feedback on where we are at the present time, where we’ve come from since inception of this board.
“I want to talk about a variety of things such as housing — the lack of — and what we’re doing, hopefully, to remedy that; about the dilapidated structures we’re working with people on; and so many other things (issues) we’re going to bring.”
Although the meeting will focus more on issues in the North Ward and the area known as “Old Vicksburg,” Mayfield said he would discuss “questions on anything.”
“We want to give them an update on our court system; the police and fire departments; recreation, which is a big topic as far as the park at Halls Ferry, the one out Fisher Ferry, the neighborhood parks, the pavilions. We just want to give an update with numbers and get out there and get their opinions about some things and maybe their suggestions.
“I want them to be aware that we are doing what’s frugal for this city and that we’re not just throwing their money in the wind,” he said, adding the discussion will include the city’s $9.2 million capital improvements bond issue and problems with sink holes cause by the collapses in the lines of the city’s aging sewer and storm drain system.
Mayfield is the third member of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen to hold a public meeting on issues affecting the city.
Mayor George Flaggs Jr. in 2015 held a series of community meetings across the city that began in the North Ward and discussed recreation and issue with drainage and dilapidated properties. South Ward Alderman Willis Thompson also held a series of meetings in the South Ward later in the year.
