The Mississippi Department of Transportation’s annual Trash Bash is scheduled to begin Thursday, May 5. That means workers will be stationed along the roadway all over Mississippi, cleaning up trash.
In Warren County, workers will be picking up trash alongside I-20 from the Flowers interchange to the Big Black River.
“Each year, volunteers dedicate time and energy to provide a high-impact clean up event in designed areas across the state through the annual Trash Bash event,” said Central Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall. “We hope that this event inspires everyone to appreciate the beauty of our state and properly dispose of trash at all times.”
Agreed. Further, we hope motorists will act with courtesy when they encounter those who are volunteering to clean up our roadways.
In addition to our area in Warren County, workers will also be picking up trash at:
• U.S. 61 south of Cleveland for two miles in Bolivar County.
• MS 547 two miles north and south from Pattison in Claiborne and Jefferson counties.
• MS 28, east of Hazlehurst in Copiah County.
• I-55 north five miles from Durant in Holmes County.
• 149 from Midnight to Silver City in Humphreys County.
• U.S. 61 from Rolling Fork to Anguilla in Sharkey and Issaquena counties.
• At Intersection 82 and 3 north and south two miles on Highway 3 in Sunflower County.
• Hwy 82 starting at Leland going west for six miles toward Greenville in Washington County.
• MS 16 from intersection of Hwy 49 to Benton in Yazoo County.
• Hwy 433 south four miles from Highway 16 in Yazoo County.
• Hwy 433 from Hwy 16 to three-way stop in Benton in Yazoo County.
• Hwy 433 from Hwy 49 two miles to Bentonia-Gibbs school in Yazoo County.
• Hwy 149 from Four Points to Yazoo River Bridge in Yazoo County.
The Trash Bash is MDOT’s contribution to the Great American Cleanup, a year-long campaign presented by Keep America Beautiful, Hall said in a press release.
Thousands of volunteers in counties across the state will remove litter from right-of-ways along Mississippi highways.
Last year, nearly 2,000 volunteers picked up more than 6,000 bags of trash from Mississippi’s highways.
Please be considerate if you happen to pass those volunteers this year. Let’s do our part in keeping them safe while beautifying our great state.
