WC’s Watts wins shot, advances to state meet

Warren Central’s Caleb Watts beat his nearest competitor by nearly two feet Saturday to win the boys shot put at the MHSAA Class 6A North State track and field meet at Madison Central.
Watts remained undefeated in the postseason with a heave of 47 feet, 11 1/2 inches. Tupelo’s Andrew Ray was second, with a throw of 46 feet, 1/2 inch.
Watts was one of six Warren Central athletes who advanced to the Class 6A state meet Friday at Pearl High School.
Also moving on from the boys’ team were Miraculous Powers in the 110 meter hurdles and Willie Smith in the high jump.
In the girls’ meet, distance runner K.K. McCarley advanced to the state meet in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters and Raven Thompson moved on in the high jump and triple jump.
Thompson was second in the high jump at North State, with a height of 5 feet. Her teammate, Kiara Lockhart, was third with a jump of 4 feet, 10 inches and also moved on to the state meet.
