St. Aloysius is third at North State

The St. Aloysius Flashes are headed into the MAIS Class AAA state golf tournament on a low.

Gabriel Riveros lost to North Delta’s Will Kidder and Hartfield’s Cameron Mobley in a playoff for the individual championship, and the Flashes finished third in the team standings at the Class AAA North State tournament Tuesday in Clarksdale.

St. Al had two of the lowest individual scores — Riveros shot a 71 and Channing Curtis a 76 — but couldn’t match the depth of North Delta and Heritage Academy.

North Delta had four players shoot 81 or better and won the team title with a score of 313. Heritage had three players under 80 and edged out St. Al for second place, 318-319.

St. Al’s lineup was rounded out by Wilson Palmertree, who shot an 83, Phillip Upshaw (89), Brandon Teller (95) and Caleb Larsen (99). The top four individual scores count toward the team score.

St. Al, which won eight MHSAA Class 1A team championships in 10 years from 2007-15, will now try to rebound and win their first state title as a member of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools.

The MAIS Class AAA state tournament is Monday at 9 a.m. at The Refuge in Flowood. It is a one-day, 18-hole tournament.
