WC softball tryouts

Tryouts for Warren Central’s fast-pitch softball team will be held May 16 and 17, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Lucy Young Field at Warren Central High School. All potential players must sign up with Coach Dana McGivney prior to the tryouts, and complete the proper paperwork and a physical. Students who will be in grades 7-9 next year can sign up Thursday, May 12, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the WC softball field. All high school students can sign up with Coach McGivney in Room 700A or at the girls’ fieldhouse.

WC basketball tryouts

Tryouts for Warren Central’s varsity boys basketball team will be held May 23-26, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. each day, at Warren Central High School’s Gym A. Players must have a current physical, signed parental consent form, a completed verification of residency form, and a completed concussion form. VHS baseball tryouts

Tryouts for Vicksburg High’s baseball team will be held May 16 and 17, from 4:15 to 6 p.m. at the VHS practice field. The tryouts are open to all students who will be in grades 7-12 in the 2016-17 school year. Players must have a current physical, their own glove, athletic attire, cleats or tennis shoes, and the proper forms filled out. Athletic forms are available in the main office of their school.

WC swimming tryouts

Tryouts for Warren Central’s varsity swim team will be held May 12, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Purks YMCA pool. All swimmers must be students of Warren Central High School or Warren Central Junior High School, and must have a current physical, their own swim suit and goggles. Fuzzy Johnson baseball

Registration for the 2016 season of the Fuzzy Johnson Baseball League is now open. The league is open to children ages 5-14, and will include three age groups.

Learn to Swim

Registration for the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program will be held at City Pool Wednesday, May 11 through Friday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. Another sign-up session will be held Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The program is open to people ages 3 and up, and adults are welcome as well. Each two-week session will consist of three morning and one evening class per week, and will instruct students based on their ability level. All classes are approximately 45 minutes in length. There are three sessions this summer — June 6-17, June 27-July 8, and July 18-29.

The cost of the program is $12 per student, and registration must be made in person. All payments are due at the time of registration. Because of high demand, parents of young children are encouraged to sign up early on May 11.

Play 2 Wynn basketball

The 14th annual Play 2 Wynn Basketball Camp is scheduled for June 20-24 at Vicksburg High School. The camp is for boys and girls ages 6-17, and the registration is $100. It will be under the direction of Donna Brown-Wynn, a Vicksburg native who played and coached at Mississippi State and Belmont University.

Packers registration

The Vicksburg Packers youth football and cheer training camp and registration will be held each Monday and Wednesday, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Vicksburg Junior High football stadium on Baldwin Ferry Road. Registration is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 12. Players and cheerleaders must not turn 13 before Aug. 1. There will be teams for players 8-, 10- and 12-and-under.

Braves tryout camp

The Atlanta Braves will host their annual pro baseball tryout camp July 13 at Trustmark Park in Pearl. The free camp begins withh registration at 9 a.m. and is open to players between the ages of 16 and 22. Players must furnish their own cleats, gloves and uniforms.
