Charles Earl Burks

Funeral services for Charles Earl “Horserider” Burks will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at Spring Ridge M.B. Church. Interment will follow at Henry Cemetery, Edwards, under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 2 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.
Mr. Burks died May 26, 2016, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. He was 79.
A resident of Vicksburg, he was born in Edwards, and attended Hubbard Elementary School and also Utica High School. He had been employed with T. L. James Construction Company, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Mat Sinking Unit, U.S. Rubber Reclaiming Co., and Rouse Rubber Reclaiming, where he retired as shipping supervisor.
He was preceded on death by his parents, Steve and Velma Burks; one brother, Alonzo Burks; and three sisters, Golena Parker, Lue Bertha Jones, and Narbell Clark.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Chambliss Burks of Vicksburg; three daughters, Rosalyn Burks Johnson of Vicksburg, Carla Burks Marshall of Jackson, and Cheryl Burks Sanders of Oakland, Tenn.; one son, Joseph Brown of Vicksburg; four brothers, Steve Burks of Chicago, Ellis Burks, pastor Phillip Burks, and Melvin Burks, all of Edwards; four sisters, Mary Dodd of Yazoo City, Florence Prentiss of Clarksdale, Shirley Burks of Indianola, and Venetta Taylor of Kathleen, Ga.; five grandchildren, two godchildren; and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives including the Mace, Stewart, Erves, Milton, and Mixon families.
