NEW ORLEANS — Former Alcorn State wide receiver Tollette George was killed late Friday night in the New Orleans suburb of Algiers, part of a series of fatal shootings in the area during the weekend.
NOLA.com reported that police found a man lying motionless on the ground near the intersection of Lauradale Drive and Vespasian Street. The man — later identified as George — had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene, the New Orleans Police Department said.
George’s death was the first of three fatal shootings in Algiers in three days. It was unknown if any of them were connected.
In a statement, Alcorn State athletics director Derek Horne said grief counselors will be made available to assists students, faculty and staff.
“Tonka was a talented student and athlete,” Horne said, referring to George by his nickname. “The Alcorn family is deeply saddened by Tonka’s death and we are praying for his family and all who knew and loved him.”
George, a New Orleans native, graduated from Alcorn in May. As a fifth-year senior in 2015, he caught 22 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns. In a 41-34 loss to North Carolina A&T in the Celebration Bowl, he had four catches for 63 yards and a TD, and also threw a TD pass.
George led the Braves in receiving in 2013, with 52 catches for 637 yards.
George’s uncle, Brandon Getridge, told NOLA.com that George lived near the site of the shooting and had family members in Algiers.
“He wanted to coach and then run the recreation department for a city,” Getridge told NOLA.com.
