City protest changes date, location

A peaceful protest planned for Wednesday and Thursday has been moved to July 29 and a new location.
Vicksburg resident Briana Knox, who requested permission from the city to hold the protest from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, said she wanted to change the date and location of the protest to 5 to 7 p.m. July 29 at 1007 Washington St., which is the Vicksburg Farmers Market site.
“I wanted to change it to next week so it could be more organized,” Knox told the board Monday.
Knox said in a June 12 letter to the city she wants to hold the protest to call attention to black-on-black crime and the lack of prosecution of crimes involving the deaths of blacks. She initially asked to hold it at the corner of Clay and Washington streets in front of the First National Bank building, but withdrew it after learning the city did not own the property.
The new date and location were in a letter received Monday by City Clerk Walter Osborne, but was too late for the Board of Mayor and Aldermen’s Monday meeting agenda. The board will make a decision on the request when it meets July 25.
Knox’s letter making the changes came after a 9 a.m. Monday meeting with Police Chief Walter Armstrong — one hour before the board meeting — about her request.
Armstrong said she was unaware the First National Bank site was private property when she made her first request. He said an alternate site on Washington Street at the Mississippi Welcome Center was also withdrawn after Knox learned the site was owned by the State of Mississippi.
