Registration open for YMCA youth football

Registration for the Vicksburg YMCA’s 2016 youth football season is open for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

There are three age divisions — K-2, Grades 3-4, and Grades 5-6 — with differing points of emphasis. The K-2 league will meet once per week on Mondays and focus on fundamentals. A practice and skills session will be followed by a pickup game, rather than a traditional league format.

The Grades 3-4 league is a flag football league that emphasizes skills development and participation. There are several rules variations designed to get every player involved while teaching them the ins and outs of the game.

The Grades 5-6 league is traditional tackle football. While continuing to teach the skills of the game, the league is designed to introduce young players to contact and instruct them in the proper way to tackle.

In addition to the football leagues, there’s a cheerleading program for children in Grades 3-6 and volunteer coaches are needed.

The registration fee for all leagues is $40 per child for Vicksburg YMCA members, and $70 for non-members. Financial aid is available for parents who need it, Vicksburg YMCA executive director Phillip Doiron said.

“The Y is a charitable organization. If there’s a kid that wants to play and doesn’t have the money, we have the funds available. We give scholarships,” Doiron said.

Registration for the 2016 season will continue until Aug. 29. Practice starts Sept. 6, and the season in late September.

For more information on the leagues or to register, visit the Purks YMCA, go online to vicksburgymca.com, or call the Y at 601-638-1071.
