Constant complaints to his office about criminal activity in area neighborhoods has prompted Mayor George Flaggs Jr. to set a public meeting Tuesday, Aug. 30, to discuss criminal activity in the city and ways to stop it.
“I keep getting calls from people across town complaining about crime in their neighborhoods,” Flaggs said. “This is from all over, and especially from the downtown area. That’s why I’ve called this meeting. I want to find out how crimes are being reported and when alternatives are available to neighborhoods.”
He said the 5:30 p.m. public meeting at the City Hall Annex will allow residents to talk with police officials and ask questions about the department.
“I’ve asked Chief (Walter) Armstrong to bring crime statistics from three years past, and I want him to bring his assistant chiefs,” he added.
According to information from the mayor’s office, deputy chiefs Bobby Steward and Johnnie Edwards and Capt. Sandra Williams will be available with Armstrong at the meeting to discuss residents’ concerns and answer questions about crime.
The meeting is one of several Flaggs has called since his election in 2013. In 2015, he held a series of community meetings to discuss city government, and that same year held a public meeting to discuss the future of the Vicksburg Municipal Airport.
