Almost time to apply for Angel Tree

It’s almost that time of year again.
The Salvation Army will begin taking Angel Tree applications Monday, Sept. 26 through Wednesday, Oct. 26 by appointment only at the Salvation Army, 530 Mission 66.
“You have to make an appointment with the social worker, and she will take your application by appointment only,” said Kamace Priest, Angel Tree coordinator for the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary.
At the appointment, people will need to bring a current Department of Human Services eligibility form, valid picture identification and the children’s birth certificates.
“The social worker will determine your eligibility, and if you are eligible, you’ll fill out your Angel Tree information for your children up to age 11,” Priest said.
Families in need of a little extra help during the holidays are encouraged to apply.
“Anybody that is currently receiving benefits through DHS and has a need for gifts for their children this Christmas (may be eligible),” Priest said.
She said families who have received gifts from the Angel Tree for three consecutive years would have to take one year off of the program. Those families, she said, could look for help from other organizations like Good Shepherd Community Center.
Angels will first be available to the community at the Women’s Auxiliary’s Soup and Sandwich Fundraiser at Crawford Street United Methodist Church Monday, Oct. 10.
“The official tree in the (Vicksburg) mall is going to go up around Nov. 12,” Priest said. “That will be located inside the mall, right outside of Dillard’s.”
To make an appointment to apply, call 601-636-2706.
“If you are unable to buy your children gifts this Christmas and you need some help, that’s what we’re here for,” Priest said. “To help you put a smile on your child’s face.”
