St. Al stumbles against rival Madison-St. Joe

After taking two steps forward last week against Pisgah, the St. Aloysius Flashes took one step back against Madison-St. Joseph.

The Flashes were plagued by turnovers, fell behind early, and lost to their Catholic School rival for the sixth time in seven years, 50-26 on Friday night.

St. Joe jumped out to a 22-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the Flashes were never able to get closer than two touchdowns after that.

“We had turnovers, and then they hit us for a big play. We had a touchdown called back and then they got an interception. Little things like that. They pretty much took it to us,” St. Al coach BJ Smithhart said. “We have a pretty tough schedule early. We know what we need to work on. Last week, we took a big step forward and this week we went backward a little bit. We’re going to have to get after it on this long holiday weekend.”

Antonio Thompson ran for two touchdowns for St. Al. Connor Bottin and Jamar Williams also had one rushing touchdown apiece.

The Flashes (0-3) will host Washington School next Friday at 7 p.m.
