City works to close out fiscal year 2016

The city of Vicksburg’s general fund has gained an extra $739,545 in tax revenue and gaming fees for the 2016 fiscal year, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen learned Friday.
The news comes as the city begins to reconcile its remaining revenues and expenses to close out fiscal year 2016.
City Accounting Director Doug Whittington said the increase was the result of most of the revenue funds coming in over budget, or having more money than originally projected when the 2016 budget was approved September 2015.
“These are just revenues that are already finished,” he said, adding the city is still awaiting two more sales tax reimbursements from the state. Those reimbursements run two months behind.
“ I know they will exceed (the projections),” he said.
Whittington, however, cautioned the board the extra revenue could be reduced when the board meets Friday to deal with the remaining expenses the city will have to pay. The extra revenue could be needed to help shore up accounts that may have a shortfall, he said.
“The main focus will be the health insurance, which has exceeded forecast,” he said. “We will not have a deficit (in the budget).”
Flaggs said the surplus “speaks volumes for this board and what we’ve had to do over the last three years. We’ve worked with the taxpayers.”
“It’s almost unbelievable that a city this size in this day and time, with all we have to deal with, is staying afloat. So my hat goes off to a lot of people,” North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield said.
