PERKINSTON — Hinds Community College kept struggling on offense, struggling on defense, and struggling against Mississippi Gulf Coast.
T’Rod Daniels ran for 110 yards, Quentin Frazier rushed for two scores, and Reggio Dean returned an interception for a touchdown as Gulf Coast beat the Eagles 34-0 on Thursday night.
Hinds (1-4, 1-2 MACJC South) had less than 200 yards of offense and gave up 30 or more points for the fourth time in five games.
The Eagles also lost to Gulf Coast for the 12th consecutive time and were shut out for the first time since 2009.
“The kids came out and played with a lot of emotion and played like they were having some fun out there,” Gulf Coast coach Chad Huff said. “When they play hard, give great effort, it’s a lot of fun.”
Hinds was only 2-of-13 on third down as it played without two key offensive starters.
Running back Brian King, a former Central Hinds star, broke his ankle in practice earlier in the week and will miss the rest of the season. Wide receiver Stephen Guidry, an LSU commit and the team’s leading receiver, did not play because of a concussion.
One bright spot for the Eagles was freshman wide receiver DeMichael Harris. The former St. Aloysius star had a season-high seven catches for 87 yards.
Linebacker Nic Chatman had 10 tackles and an interception.
Gulf Coast (2-3, 21-) ran for 280 yards as a team and finished with 442 yards of total offense. Quarterback Kalen Whitlow was 17-of-24 for 174 yards, with one touchdown and an interception before giving way to his backup in the third quarter.
Frazier ran for a pair of short touchdowns and Whitlow threw a 15-yard TD pass to Lester Wells to give the Bulldogs a 20-0 lead at halftime.
Dean returned an interception for a touchdown and Ge’Vonte Jones scored on a 9-yard run in the third quarter to finish the scoring.
“We saw a lot of things we could take advantage of,” Dean said. “We got after the quarterback and locked up the receivers. They’ve got some big, tall wide receivers, but we knew if we put pressure on the quarterback, he’d have to speed up.”
With the win, Gulf Coast moved into a three-way tie for first in the MACJC South Division with Copiah-Lincoln and East Central Community College.
Hinds will host Copiah-Lincoln, which is ranked No. 18 in the country, next Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
