Mary Ethel Wroten Hogan

Mary Ethel Wroten Hogan of the Culkin community and Crowville, La., passed away Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016, at Charlyn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Winnsboro, La. She was 89.
Born to a farming family in northern Louisiana, Mary was the daughter of the late Herbert Edward and Frances Guyton Wroten, and was the last surviving member of her birth family.
Being trained as a registered nurse by the Sisters of Mercy, Mary received her nursing degree at the Mercy Hospital-Street Memorial School of Nursing, then she worked in her profession for over 50 years. She served for four years on the national credentialing committee of the American Association of Critical Care Nursing. In 1985, Mary was honored at the state level being named Mississippi Staff Nurse of the Year. Mary was highly praised for her nursing skills and acknowledged by her peers as a superior nursing coach.
In addition to her nursing career, Mary and her husband Thomas J. Hogan Sr. raised a family of nine children and provided for their education in the Vicksburg Catholic Schools system and beyond, continuing to support them in their adult lives. She was a lifelong communicant of St. Paul Catholic Church.
An avid gardener, Mary taught everyone to compost and recycle and generously offered pass-along plants to anyone who stopped by her home.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by three sisters, Gloria Ann Wroten of Crowville, Willie Mae Sartor of Monroe, La., and Hazel Brennan of New Orleans; her husband, Tom Hogan; two sons, Patrick Hogan and Denis Hogan; one grandson, Marty Hogan; and one son-in-law, Salameh Nsour.
Mary is survived by her children, Tommy (Lila) Hogan of Hammond, La., Marianne Hogan-Nsour of Fremont, Calif., Susan (Roy) Schepens of Augusta, Ga., Mike Hogan of Edwards, Jerome (Gina) Hogan of San Angelo, Texas, Martin Hogan of Vicksburg and Philip Hogan of Stephenville, Texas; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, at St. Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Lalor officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home with Rosary at 6:30, and from 9 a.m. Saturday until the hour of service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Mike Hogan, Pat Schepens, Faisal Nsour, Faris Nsour, David Hogan and John Ryan Hogan. Honorary pallbearers will be Religious Sisters of Mercy, District 12 Nurses Association, staff of Charlyn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Martha Yeats, Joyce Heath, Frankie Heard, Mary Kincade and TLC Hospice Services.
