Jones rallies to beat Hinds

RAYMOND — Scott Phillips had three rushing touchdowns, including the go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter, as Jones County Junior College rallied to beat Hinds Community College 28-27 Thursday night.

Hinds quarterback J.P. Elkins threw for 195 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Stephen Guidry. Devante Scott also had 87 rushing yards and a touchdown for Hinds (2-6, 2-4 MACJC South). Guidry finished with 126 receiving yards.

Elkins’ third touchdown pass was a 46-yarder to John Hightower and gave the Eagles a 27-14 lead with 7:03 left in the third quarter.

Jones (5-3, 2-3) came back, however, getting within a touchdown on a 33-yard TD run by Detric Hawthorn in the final minute of the third quarter and then scoring the go-ahead touchdown on Phillips’ 3-yard run with 9:57 left in the game.

Hinds lost for the fourth time in five games and has been eliminated from playoff contention. It’ll finish the season next Thursday at No. 3 East Mississippi.
